Wouldn't it be great if ALL applications used a typical SYSLOG format? What if Windows could do SYSLOG without purchasing more software or adding on some other extension?
That would be utopia and everything would work great the first time.
Reality is different vendors use different data formats, logging and mechanisms to collect data. WMI is different than PERFMON, ps -ef is different on AIX and is different on Solaris.
Until everyone agrees to be the same expect that there will have to be custom solutions to satisfy requirements.

RANT - Custom is NOT a bad thing
Why do so many people think a custom solution is bad? Tools today give us the ability to extend their functionality because not all products use standard event or logging formats.
